Strength and Flexibility? Where??

After reading EkamYogini’s blog post on strength and flexibility the other day, I thought I’d share my own take on it, as a beginner that hasn’t yet started regular Ashtanga yoga practice.

I get it in theory, I really do. You need both to be able to actually be able to do most of the postures and one will probably always outweigh the other, causing you to have to constantly work at the one that is weighted more lightly.

Well, I’m lacking in both.

I know. It sucks.

Last night’s class was somewhat successful in that I learnt SO much about what good asanas look and feel like, and what they are supposed to be working in my body.

I did, however, leave feeling defeated. I’ve been whipped and beaten. Put back in my place. Humbled. And slightly annoyed.

I’m going back into my box now to regroup. Practice practice practice – that’s the only way I’m going to get better at this.

The day I can get into purvattanasana (back-bend), I’m cracking open the champagne and you’ll hear ALL about it.

  1. purvottonasana didn’t start getting fun for me until about 2 weeks ago 🙂 it definitely plays on strength in the shoulders and openness in the shoulders and chest. but it will come- no fear!
